A real core

Not a yield-only sleeve and not a 500-stock index. Ten businesses you can actually own and follow.

Growth and income

Cash distributions from quality Canadian companies, with enough earnings power left to compound.

Monthly on purpose

Checked on the second-last trading day of each month. If nothing material changed, we leave it alone.

Track record

Built to beat the TSX

Each month we take the ten largest eligible names and reset weights to 100%, but only when a name changes or a weight moves by at least 0.50 percentage points. 2017-07-31 to 2026-09-17. Hypothetical, before tax and trading costs.

The chart rebuilds the top ten each month and compares it with the S&P/TSX Composite. Closing prices, with dividends reinvested.

How often it changes

Easy enough to actually follow

Weekly trading does not pay for itself. We look once a month, on the second-last trading day, so a month-end holiday does not scramble the snapshot. If the ten names are the same, there is nothing to do.

  1. 1

Start with businesses that earn reliably, carry a strong balance sheet, and can afford the dividend.

  2. 2

Hold the ten largest of those Canadian companies. The weights add up to 100%.

  3. 3

Look again on the second-last trading day of each month. Change a name or a weight only when it moves by at least half a percentage point.

  4. 4

Mix growth and income, so this can sit at the centre of a Canadian account rather than being a pile of high yields.

  5. 5

Compare the result with the S&P/TSX Composite, using closing prices with dividends reinvested, before tax and trading costs.
